A lot of speculations had been doing the rounds regarding who would play the role of Dalbir Kaur in the much talked about Sarabjit Singh biopic which is being helmed by Omung Kumar. The role of Dalbir Kaur was offered to Kangana Ranaut, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra but the Jazbaa actress is the one who bagged it!
Dalbir Kaur is the 61 years old sister of Sarabjit Singh, the late farmer who crossed over to Pakistan in 1990 and was mistaken for an Indian spy by the Pakistani government. While he was sentenced to capital punishment, he was not hanged. He was tortured in prison. He was kept in jail for 23 years and was murdered by inmates a few days after the death of Afzal Guru in India. Dalbir, who was Sarabjit’s elder sister, spent the good years of her life trying to get her brother released and clear his name. Sarabjit was more like a son to her and her defeat in being able to bring her brother back to India is one of the most crushing stories that will now be told on celluloid.
